Spring Fling Road Trip – Day 3

Saturday was the day of Spring Fling, so we got up early, registered for the event, meeted and greeted for a bit, and then headed northward in search of breakfast and geocaches. It was a dreary day, so instead of spending the day geocaching in the rain at the event, we opted for car-caching toward Midland, Ontario to get a much-coveted virtual geocache and an Earthcache.

We found some traditionals en route to Midland, like the one hidden at this water tower. There’s a very large, protected wetland near Minesing that I’d love to visit some other time.

Simcoe County takes pride in its forests.

Simcoe County should also take some pride in this clever hide. Leave it to Taoiseach the lumber nerd to wonder why the extra piece of 4×4 was there. (In case you’re wondering, I do not post these spoiler pictures to my cache logs.)

I had never heard of this burial pit before seeing the description for the virtual geocache. Please do not use my picture to log an armchair find on this virtual, unless you want to be publicly mocked.

That’s a big anchor.

Midland is a very pretty town. We went to Den’s Skillet for breakfast – which was delicious – and also visited a neat secondhand bookstore while we were there. Small Ontario towns – including the one I grew up in – all have a pretty similar appearance, which I think is typified by this photograph.

Before heading back to Barrie, we stopped at “Little Lake” in Midland to do an Earthcache. I snapped some pictured of Canada Geese while we were there.

Baby geese are so cute.

We made it back to the event with plenty of time left to socialize and participate in the final door prize raffle (WHICH I WON). The parking lot was FULL of geocaches with TB tags on them. I also spotted this awesome license plate.

We were sure to sign the log.

Umm, your guess is as good as mine.

The event easily reached mega status again this year. This is one of the official group photos, taken by Gregory Pleau.

After the main event, we dropped in to one of the “apres” events and then went out for Chinese buffet with fellow Ottawans dadndaughter and GreenFrog. We wrapped up the day with a multi-cache in Barrie before heading back to the campground where another bonfire and tasty beer awaited us.
