Spring Fling Road Trip – Day 4

On Sunday morning we got up, tried to find something to CITO (you’d be amazed at how clean a park is after 500+ geocachers descend upon it), and then went into Barrie for a bite to eat before we hit the road.

We struck out at three or four restaurants before finally finding a nice Thai place overlooking the waterfront. Here’s a snapshot of downtown Barrie.

We stopped by this neat old jailhouse to grab a geocache.

Taoiseach had never been to the Muskokas before and it was a gorgeous day, so we took a long route back to Peterborough.

We stopped near a hydro dam and lock to do an Earthcache that focused on this interesting vein of granite.

There were a few other people poking around, fishing, and taking pictures.

Then we headed to Big Chute, home to one of the most interesting features of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Financial problems and substantial physical barriers made it very difficult to build a proper canal and lock here, so a marine railway system was built instead.

In the 70s, the marine railway was upgraded to increase capacity, but the older section is still in operating condition in case it’s needed as a backup.

Lots of people were swimming and sunning themselves below this dam where we stopped to find a cache.

We went through Bala, ON. I worked at a summer camp near Bala when I was a teenager, so it was neat to visit it again. We found a geocache near this interesting graffiti.

We also did an Earthcache right in Bala.

By then, it was starting to get late, so we headed straight back to Peterborough to relieve my mother of her child-care duties. We have quite a knack for turning a 2-hour trip into an 8-hour trip – but it was worth it.

  1. So do they haul the boats out of the water and across the land?? I’m confused.

    • Yeah, that’s exactly what they do. There’s a big elevation change, so the railway brings the boats up or down.
